  A Deeper Intimacy

Beginning with ending,
His last stiffened strain and gasp -
This gift is given.
The air is thick and heavy.

Their eyes meet, knowing, and hands.
Wordless and loving,
Content and certain, tonight's
Joyful joined accord.

Gold chain glitters at her neck -
He pushes a pillow under her hips,
Commanding
She lie still for half an hour.

Together they speak,
As she keeps safe their miracle,
Of the stillness that quickens
And grows in its season.

Ending with beginning,
Her last stiffened strain and gasp -
This gift is given.
The air is thick and heavy.
